Why Do I Need A Medical EMR System?

 

Medical EMR is a type of record keeping that uses digital files rather than keeping papers and files in an office. The abbreviation itself stands for electronic medical records. Many people believe that this is preferable to the old way of keeping records because they take up less space, and require less upkeep. Then there are those that do not approve of medical EMR.

Medical EMR has been slow to catch on in the United States, and much slower than it has in other parts of the world including Europe. In fact it has been estimated that only 16% of all physicians working in the US have adopted this type of software, and only 10% of all hospitals. Some claim this is because medical EMR can be difficult to implement, and quite expensive. A large number of hospitals and private physicians simply do not have the funds needed to install this type of software onto their computers.

Medical EMR is also slow to catch on because it requires a number of different systems to operate. Some have complained that they cannot simply add the new programs to their computer system, and expect everything to work. Instead they need to use different programs and find some way to make everything work at the same time. The doctors and hospitals who use this type of medical EMR are required to hire a professional to install the software, and then learn how to work the programs.

Another reason why medical EMR has been so slow to catch on is because there are no standards on which the systems operate. No two hospitals or doctor’s offices work in the same way, and this holds true for their operating systems as well. What that means in layman’s terms is that there is currently no way to make all systems compatible and capable of working together. 

Why is this such a problem? The main reason is because medical professionals cannot easily share their information by using medical EMR programs. When an individual suffers a serious health problem and is admitted into the hospital, the hospital needs their medical history and records to properly diagnosis their problem or condition. Previously this was as easy as looking through the records, and faxing that information to the proper place. This cannot happen as easily when using this type of software.

Medical EMR is slowly working to change the way doctors, hospitals, and others in the medical field do their business. While it has been slow to catch on, there is some indication that things may be changing. Each year, more and more medical professionals are beginning to update their software and systems with medical EMR. Before long this may become the standard by which hospitals and doctors operate.
